Corrective and Terminative Markers Rivisited

In recent years, a lot has been written about (pragmatic) markers and research on these discourse units has used a variety of analytic tools: Gricean pragmatics, textlinguistics, discourse analysis, conversational analysis, etc. Presently, it seems that also the cognitive grammar approach is gaining terrain in the analysis of markers. Within this framework, much emphasis has been given to polysemy. What is missing, however, is “extensive lexicographic analysis, spelling out particular conceptual meanings in explicit detail for substantial numbers of lexical items in different languages” (Langacker in: Maldonado 2004, 315-316). This is a somewhat surprising assessment, because the analysis of polysemy presupposes explicit analyses of particular meanings. Clearly, Langacker’s remark applies also to markers. The contribution will therefore centre on the question of what could be explicit descriptions of meanings/uses of markers within a cognitive grammar approach (Langacker, Fauconnier). The point of departure will be Hölker (1988), a description of some aspects of French corrective and terminative markers. Examples will mainly be drawn from Romance languages.
